Welcome and a brief introduction: I’m an associate professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where I have a joint appointment in the School of Public Policy & Global Affairs and the Department of Political Science. I’m also the Director of UBC's Institute of Asian Research and Associate Editor (Southeast Asia) at Pacific Affairs

Much of my work focuses on political development in Southeast Asia and the Canada-Southeast Asia relationship. It has been published in leading disciplinary and area studies journals, including the American Political Science Review; Democratization; Political Science Research and Methods; Politics, Groups, and Identities; Pacific Affairs; Journal of East Asian Studies; Asian Survey; and the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal. My analyses have been featured in outlets including The Atlantic, Bloomberg, CBC, The Guardian, Nikkei Asian Review, Globe and Mail, and the South China Morning Post.

I am also involved in policy and development work as a consultant for the World Bank and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), as well as an advisor to governments on both domestic issues in Southeast Asia and transpacific relations. I hold research appointments at ISEAS (Singapore), the Penang Institute (Malaysia), and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. I was previously Chair of APSA’s Southeast Asian Politics Related Group and VP of the Canadian Council for Southeast Asian Studies. When I can, I bike or run to keep my head clear.
